Amazon Cloud Makes Business History

Amazon Cloud Makes Business History

My Amazon, you’ve been busy as of late. You’ve released an astonishing Kindle book deal. Whether that succeeds or backfires, we’ll soon find out. If it backfires, you’ve got something to fall back on.

According to Pacific Crest Securities, Amazon Cloud’s revenue will increase 58% this year. But that’s just the beginning. Their cloud is already worth 3.1 billion dollars. If their luck continues, it will be worth 6.7 billion dollars by this time next year. This puts Amazon Cloud on par as one of the fastest growing software businesses of all time. Their cloud growth is now up there with traditional servers, like Dell and Hewlett Packard. Last time checked, Amazon Cloud made 1.25 billion dollars?per quarter. These numbers come form Pacific Crest Securities because Amazon won’t dare release it’s own numbers, no matter how successful.

It’s great they can grow a business to this unprecedented success. It definitely puts more traditional servers on notice, which is good for consumer as well as corporation. But a business can grow too fast. I hope Amazon Cloud is careful to keep up with the growing demand for this product and has enough resources and manpower to do just that. I’ve seen major businesses go belly up when growing at this rampant speed. Will Amazon Cloud be able to keep pace?

Google Offers 2TB Free Cloud Storage Panzura

Google Offers 2TB Free Cloud Storage Panzura

Ever hear the phrase, “Anything you can do I can do better”? Google is taking that to the clouds.

On Wednesday, July 9, 2014, Google revealed a deal offering customers two terabytes of free cloud storage for up to a year. To get this free Google Cloud Platform storage, customers need to install cloud software from Panzura. Never heard of Panzura? They’re one of Google’s partners that specializes in cloud gateway software. Until yesterday, they charged for this service, but under these circumstances, they’re offering it for free.

If you need help setting up Panzura and want to give it a try, Computer Geeks can help you set everything up right in the comfort of your home!

This is a direct and blatant challenge to rivals like Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure. They both also offer free and generous file storage to their customers. There’s one more catch to this Google free cloud storage: you can only access it from one location. If you need a second or third or other locations, and in this busy world who doesn’t, it will cost you. This is just the latest push of free cloud and storage services between these mega-conglomerates some are calling ‘cloud wars’. Google already gives free 15GB of free storage to drive customers, while Microsoft increased it’s storage limit to 1TB for Office 365. Think of what this will do for Panzura, a relatively unknown company new in the technological spotlight. How will Amazon and Microsoft respond? Will they even respond?? Of these three online conglomerates, who will win the cloud wars?

Hospitals Create Credit Card Data

Hospitals Create Credit Card Data

What if you were called and told your health insurance company dropped you? What’s the reason they dropped you? They got your credit card purchases and due to those purchases, they want nothing to do with you.

It’s not very far-fetched. Carolinas HealthCare, based in Charlotte, NC, is using consumer data on two million people, without their knowledge or permission, to identify high risk patients. They get the data from brokers who deal in public health records and even credit card purchases. For example, say they find fast food and junk food purchases through your credit/debit card statement, thanks to some data broker. You’re automatically a target for obesity. They find that bar tab on your card. You’re targeted for everything from cirrhosis to depression. The scenarios go on and on.

I understand why some people say this could be a good thing. Doctors and nurses would know your habits even before your first visit. They could know what to treat you for. They can even encourage lifestyle changes before you get too sick. In a just world, that would be true. Let’s face it: this isn’t a just world. First off, data brokers and health care providers shouldn’t be digging dirt on anybody until they have the knowledge and approval of the people. Second, this just tramples on privacy rights. And I think this will worsen doctor-patient relationships. This is going to create mistrust to the point where the patient won’t even want to see the doctor anymore. And you know health providers will probably look at this and reject clients because of ‘too many bad habits’. Do you think this data collection will catch on with other health providers?

Crypto Virus: Focusing on Consumers and the Law

Crypto Virus: Focusing on Consumers and the Law

You may have heard of the crypto locker virus. This virus came about late last year and has affected thousands of people and businesses. One of the business types that has been infected is the law. Police offices, lawyers and the bunch have been hit hard by this infection.

Back in December, Computer Geeks was featured in a news report from WBZ news to talk about the experience that people have with this virus. Computer Geeks is focused on not only removing the virus, but saving your data. Typically people infected with this virus have a one percent success rate of recovering their data and even paying the ransom may not guarantee you get your files back. Because of this, Computer Geeks recommends a data backup solution. This solution can be as easy as an external hard drive that you back up to on a scheduled basis or going up into the cloud and using a source like Carbonite to back your data up securely.

Computer Geeks IT support for law firms has been helping many lawyers not only to protect their data but also prevent infections such as the crypto locker virus. Computer Geeks also recommends a brand new product that we offer through Carbonite. This new appliance is set up to give you onsite data backup and cloud storage for redundancy of your files.

Please note that most people don’t think about how valuable their information is until it’s lost. This isn’t just for consumers, but businesses as well. Putting the focus on IT support for law firms, think about how tragic it would be if you lost your case files, client data and other vital information. Now that you’ve taken a minute to think about it, isn’t it worth contacting Computer Geeks to find out how you can protect that data with just a simple phone call?

Microsoft and Iowa

Microsoft and Iowa

When one thinks of Iowa, what comes to mind? Is it cornfields? Is it traditional Midwestern values? Is it presidential elections?

How about Microsoft? That’s right: This tech giant is making plans to put a billion plus dollar data center in West Des Moines, Iowa. Among other things, this center will house equipment that will run portal services as part of Microsoft’s online services businesses. This will bring a $2 billion dollar investment to the state and take about four years to complete. This will also create many good paying jobs for the West Des Moines area, not to mention tax revenue? and the companies this will attract. I think West Des Moines Mayor Steve Gaer has a reason to be exited. He said, “?It really sets up central Iowa as the leading technology center in the United States.”

I’m happy for Iowa and for West Des Moines, but I’d love to see this be trend for all over America. I’m tired of hearing experts talk about how bad America is weakening and how much China and India are prospering. I urge all corporations to follow Microsoft’s tune and create more technological jobs and opportunities for here at home. Will this trend spread?

Have a safe and prosperous Easter, everybody!
