YouTube Outshines Hollywood

YouTube Outshines Hollywood

I had a feeling this day would come. A popular magazine asked young people ages 13-18 who are their favorite celebrities today.

Over 1,500 teens were asked to choose their favorite celebrities based on approachability, authenticity, and positive influence, among other qualities. Of the top 20 celebs that made the list, the top five were You Tube personalities. In fact, half of those who made the list were YouTube stars. That’s Right folks YouTube Outshines Hollywood! The top 5 You Tube celebs include Smosh (who took the #1 spot), The Fine Bros,? and Ryan Higa. Top Hollywood celebs on the list include the late Paul Walker, Jennifer Lawrence and Katy Perry. According to the many teens surveyed, YouTube stars are more engaging and extraordinary.

But the magazine article says there is a danger if YouTube stars go to Hollywood. They could lose their credibility. But that’s the danger of anyone who wants to get in the entertainment business and remain in good standing with your fans. I think a lot of entertainers today forget that. That’s one reason half this list is made of YouTube stars. I testify myself there are some days and nights I don’t even turn on the TV. I just keep my computer or device on You Tube and other social media aspects. Often times, the entertainment is even better. I don’t know about you, but YouTube celebs just feel more…human.? Think about this: who is more likely to sign your autograph, Smosh or Madonna?

Facebook Messenger is #1…Twice

Facebook Messenger is #1…Twice

Ever see a movie or TV show that is so bad you can’t help but go see it again? Is the Facebook Messenger App in that category?

The Facebook Messenger app is the number one free app in the App Store today. It also has the dreaded one star rating. Many people are very upset since Facebook forced Apple and Android device users into Facebook Messenger. This app is nothing new. It was created in 2011, but users have been hesitant on using it; now it’s being pushed onto the consumer. The one star rating is in App Stores all over the world, okay, maybe some nations have mercy and give it a two star rating. The only reason still has a four star rating on Android is because Android combines the old Facebook app and the new messenger app ratings. And even there, the reviews on Facebook Messenger are hardly anything good.

Every concern imaginable, from poor uploading to privacy issues, is what’s holding Facebook back. Previous changes haven’t worked so well for them either. I’ve been asked, “How is this any different than what Microsoft did to Windows XP back in April?” Well, by April, Windows had newer and better versions, so most people were comfortable with switching. Facebook Messenger App was the only plan, and few are happy with it. Plus, nobody really likes to be forced into doing something. That’s just human nature. People have gotten so comfortable with the old Facebook app and now to change everything is a breeding ground for disgruntle consumers. Will Facebook learn anything from this?

Yahoo and Encryption

Yahoo and Encryption

Yahoo is one of the most popular email service providers today. It’s also one of the most hacked. Now Yahoo is fighting back. At a Black Hat Conference in Las Vegas, Yahoo officials announced end-to-end capabilities for all Yahoo Mail users. This should be ready in 2015. End-to-end encryption is like a narrow tunnel exclusively for the email sender and receiver, squeezing uninvited parties like cyber hackers and dare I say it, government agencies out. The ironic thing is, Yahoo was one of the last email carriers to provide SSL encryption. They only did this after they found out lack of SSL encryption gave the NSA better opportunity to read and collect our email addresses and address books.? They’re also working to build end-to-end encryption for a mobile app. Now I already know what skeptics are saying. They’re probably saying this isn’t going to change much, if hackers want to get in, they’re going to, the NSA will find another way to get in, etc. But let’s give Yahoo Mail for trying to do something. Of course, Google Chrome already has an end-to-end encryption. But if trail and error and competition is what it took to get Yahoo to launch so a program, then better late than never. I wonder how many email consumers Yahoo lost because of lack of protection. So I say let’s give this program a chance. Do you think end-to-end encryption will keep Yahoo emails safer?

Is This Russian Censorship?

Is This Russian Censorship?

Russia is enforcing new rules on Internet bloggers. As of today, August 1, all blogs having at least 3,000 readers a day will face stricter government scrutiny, such as ban of explicit language, this seems like Russian Censorship to me.

This new code nicknamed Bill on Bloggers was signed by Russian president Putin in May 2014. Any blogger with 3,000+ visitors a day must register with Russian government watchdog Roskomnadzor. They’ll be under the same restrictions as mainstream journalist. Restrictions include, but don’t limited to, refraining from slander or hate speech. They have to use their own name, no aliases. Any blogger caught breaking these rules will be blocked on Russian territory. Rule breakers are subject to fines equaling $850. I’ve read cases where fines can reach up to $15,000.

This sounds like common sense on paper. One can argue this is similar to the same regulations the Federal Communications Commission has on US media. But Russian Internet companies are already protesting, some are even cooking the numbers to make sure their blogs have a maximum 2,500 readers a day just to avoid the Bill on Bloggers. I can sympathize with these bloggers. They say you can’t use obscene language. Yes, I know about the seven words you can’t say on TV. But what if someone criticizes Putin at all? Is that obscene. Keep in mind Putin was a KGB officer, so in his mind and in his administrators’ minds, criticism is probably offensive. Even in this country, bloggers aren’t subjected to such scrutiny. If they were, then probably a fourth of the blogs we read would be taken down by the government. But this is Russia. Why am I talking about it here in the USA? Do you really think this can’t happen here? So I ask you: is Bill on Bloggers a common sense law or is it a gateway to censorship?
