Do you remember Apple Maps from a few years ago? Remember what a disaster and a joke that was? Apple has acquired a GPS company that could help.
Apple announced it’s acquirement of Coherent Navigation, a Silicon Valley area based mapping and positioning firm. This purchase was made to boost Apple’s presence in the GPS field. Coherent Navigation was founded in 2008 as a small commercial navigation firm. In the years that followed, navigational firms have exploded! Coherent has worked on everything from auto navigation to robotics. Coherent has worked on high precision systems, which is even stronger than consumer navigation systems, since there’s less room for error. We don’t know how Apple is going to use Coherent Navigation’s services. But the competition over navigation among major tech conglomerates continues to intensify. For years, Google has all but dominated mapping technology. In February, Uber opened a robotic autonomous research facility at Pittsburgh, PA’s Carnegie Mellon University. A group of German car makers are trying to beat Uber in acquiring Nokia Here, the digital mapping section of Nokia. There’s another reason Uber wants Nokia Here. Uber wants to lessen their dependence on Google Maps. So the plot thickens.
What’s the fight over Nokia Here got to do anything? It shows you how important mapping/GPS technology is. And with more people depending ?on GPS, the competition is going to get even more intense. Apple knows this and is doing something about it. From what I know, Coherent Navigation is a solid company to help Apple out. I’m not taking sides by any means. Personally, I’d like for businesses to remain small and I’m getting a little weary of hearing of yet another acquisition every week. But if I were an Apple executive, this is the move I would make. Do you Apple acquiring Coherent Navigation will even make a difference?
Computer users have been on the hunt for the most secure and stable apps and operating systems out there, and the shocking truth about which Apps and Operating Systems are actually the most stable may surprise you.
As far as operating systems go, sorry all you MAC lovers, the award for the most vulnerabilities no longer goes to Microsoft, but to Apple Mac OS X, followed by Apple iOS and then Linux kernel. The numbers to date show Mac OS X had 147 vulnerabilities - 64 being rated as high severity. Numbers also show there were 127 in iOS - 32 of those rated as high. And lastly, Linux kernel had 119 security vulnerabilities - 24 being rated as high severity.
As far as Apps go, Microsoft cannot gloat too much about being the most secure, as Internet Explorer had nearly twice as many flaws as the second most flawed app on the list ? which was Chrome. This comes as a shocking truth, as many people have viewed Chrome as the most stable and secure App. Internet explorer had 242 security flaws - 220 of those being high severity. Chrome had 124 total bugs with 86 of those rated as high.
So, as you can see users need to be aware, and choose carefully when installing Apps and Operating Systems on their computers. There are always going to be bugs out there, because nothing out there will ever be ?perfect?, but if you run into some trouble with your computer, know Computer Geeks is always there to help. Some good news is that that the percentage of vulnerabilities rated as ?high severity? dropped to 24% in 2014. So at least there is some hope going forward!
Chinese based computer technology firm Lenovo dropped the ball. It promoted software that was meant for good, but turned out to be anything but. This is Lenovo’s security fail.
The software was called Superfish. It was on laptops and PC’s sold between September 2014 and January 2015. Off the bat, Superfish got bad reviews. But earlier this week, the situation went from bad to worse. A password was discovered that would allow anybody access to the computer’s certificate authority, even if it means bypassing encryption. And as sophisticated as hackers are today, they can easily infiltrate that Lenovo computer to spy on the user or flood their system with malware. This could lead to identity theft, sextortion, revenge porn, cyber bullying, and other cyber crimes and indecencies. Lenovo has come up with software to help you uninstall Superfish and test your machine to see if you have this potential threat. Superfish is such a widespread concern that even the US Department of Homeland Security is urging customers to test and rid their machines of Superfish.
I’m glad they caught this potential threat when they did. I haven’t heard of anybody being hacked severely by Superfish. Let’s hope it stays that way before we read yet another report of a major hacking. Lenovo is working with Microsoft and other technological giants to combat this threat. So if you think you’re venerable, don’t procrastinate. Get it off your system immediately. Don’t wait until you’re the next victim. But what can be done to prevent Superfishes of the future?
Today, I’m talking about free Google Earth Pro. It used to cost nearly $400 a year. Now this geography based software app is about to be totally free.
Google Earth Pro is somewhat of a spinoff of Google Earth. Google Earth was started in 2004 after Google acquired a small company called Keyhole Inc. Google Earth supplies a virtual globe in which you can find geographic data anywhere in the world, or should I say universe. You can even explore Mars and the Earth’s moon on it. But with Google Earth Pro, one can get premium photos. Earth Pro automatically locates GIS (geographic information system) images. The free Earth version makes you do it the old fashion way. Earth Pro offers map addresses for spreadsheets and lets you locate multiple points at the same time. Though Earth Pro is geared for businesses, it’s often used by scientists, adventure travelers and environmentalist. It’s by no means limited to just studying the Earth. Google Earth Pro has been used for building eco-friendly homes, predicting potential disasters, and planning the next outdoor getaway, to go where few dare to go. There are dozens of other uses for Google Earth Pro.
This is why I believe this is a great call by Google. Yes, Earth Pro offers more than Earth does, but $400 more? Okay, you break that down by month and it’s only $33 a month and $7.70 a week, but look at what you’re getting with that. Or should I say, look at what you’re not getting with that. You’re only getting a few cooler perks with Earth pro, but nothing worth paying ?$33 a month. Businesses may be able to afford that, but what about that traveler hiking around the country backpacking and staying in hostels? So hats off to Google for making Earth Pro accessible to all. In today’s economy, can you pull out an extra $399 out of your hat?

So that is the conference. What do you think? Are you impressed. I have to say I was and if they pull this off it will be amazing. What I saw today I never expected to see in my time. Some of these things have only been seen in movies but now they are real. The only thing I am disappointed in is that there is no exact date. Thank you for joining me today!
Microsoft is set to unveil its brand new Windows OS Windows 10 which they plan to unveil tomorrow at press event at 9AM PT or 11AM eastern in Redmond, WA. This new operating system is set to be universal across all devices.
This is event is going to be huge for Microsoft as 8 and even 8.1 have not been very popular with most people. It is said that 10 will take the best things from 7 and 8 and mesh them together to make an operating system unlike no other. This is a big deal as Windows 8 powers less than 10 percent of all computers in the world and that is according to NetMarketshare and Windows 7 holds over 50 percent of the desktop market.
The other big thing that is supposed to come with this announcement is that this OS will be multi-platform and will be on desktops, laptops, mobile phones and tablets. With the problems people reported with the mobile phone OS of Microsoft mobile phones. Microsoft?s mobile phone share is at only 3 percent verses Google?s Android and Apple?s iOS.
The most interesting part is that they want this to be an operating system that is a one Windows vision which will reinvent productivity. Windows 10 will run on every device with one way to write applications and will have one store to sell them. This could mean some possible big struggles for software developers. Making software that will work on a phone, tablet, and PC is going to be very difficult to do.
So will there be a big uproar about how Microsoft is designing this new operating system? Or will it revolutionize the way we compute? We will find out tomorrow when Microsoft talks about Window 10, Xbox and possibly the new internet browser know as Spartan.
Follow us tomorrow at 12PM eastern as we will be live blogging the event.
