Google released some staggering numbers at the company?s developers conference in San Francisco. They announced they have seen 400 million device activations and is adding 1 million per day. This is up from the 100 million that the company announced just last year around this same time. Based on the numbers that comes down to 12 new Android devices every second. Taking a look at the Android/Apple rivalry the nice people over at Apple have stated that they have sold cumulatively 365 million devices. Part of the success for Android has been pointed to the growth in developing countries like Brazil and India where it is more affordable and accessible compared to other smartphone platforms on the market today.

The number one reason people say they buy macs is because they don’t get viruses. Well guess what not so much anymore. With the attack of the Flashback botnet that targeted Mac computers, Apple quietly removed messages on its website that the mac operating system X or OS X isn’t susceptible to virtues. Apple removed the previous statement “It doesn’t get PC viruses” and replaced it with “It’s built to be safe,” and “Safeguard your data. By doing nothing” with “Safety. Built in. So the mac isn’t perfect after all. What will happen to people now that macs are starting to get viruses?

The new iPhone map application that will take over for Google maps will have a feature for checking into places with Yelp. So this will give you the ability to share where you are with friends like with Facebook. The nice thing about this is that you don’t have to leave the Apple map app to mark that you have checked in to a place it is all done right through the actual program, unlike with checking in with facebook you can’t just check in through a map program you have to check in through the facebook app. This integration will help Yelp become tops in check in software as it is trying to beat out the likes of Foursquare labs and Facebook. This will also help Yelp with advertising, currently Yelp’s local advertising made up 70% of the revenue in 2011 and being able to check in at a local spot with maybe a coupon attached to it could draw a lot of local companies into advertising with Yelp. Currently based on research done by the Pew Research Center 18% of adult smartphone owners check into places. This map feature will be included into the iOS6 updates coming soon.

If you are an Apple employee you already know this but Tim Cook awhile back announced there would be a new employee discount program that would make a major impact in being able to own this expensive computers. Apple starting the new iPad and Mac discount program. Apple employees are now able to purchase Macs with a $500 discount which excludes the Mac mini and iPads with a $250 discount through the Apple internal employee portal and this comes on top of the 25% discount already given to employees. The deal is that employees will be able to take advantage of this offer every three years and employees must have been with the company for at least three months. This is to avoid mass purchases of Apple product that could be sold at dirt cheap rates.

So there are tons of rumors about the surface one being no 3/4G which I wrote about yesterday. Today let’s talk price. Unwired is speculating that the surface tablets will be over $599. Now let’s not forget if these don’t come with 3/4G that could be a bit pricey for the starter tablet. Based in Microsoft stating the Surface’s second model named the RT will be more of a PC I could see that being maybe $749/799. If that is the case most have speculated the starter model would be $100 less. So around $649/699. I think these prices could be risky if they don’t have mobile carriers included in the tablet. Microsoft has always had trouble with mobile devices starting with the Zune. Now granted they haven’t made hardware on the phone side yet but the Nokia Windows phones have not done well against the androids and the iPhones of the world. So Microsoft really has to make this one count to break the very poor track record they have of poor showing in the mobile markets.

One of throat interesting things of note about the Surface tablet is not what is in the tablet but what isn’t in the tablet and that is the lack of 3/4G from cell companies like AT&T and Verizon. This is being reported by Bloomberg and states they have to sources close to the development that would not be named due to the fact Microsoft has not released all details on the tablet. This will be a big deal if these tablets do not come with mobile carrier coverage. If this happens could we really call this a iPad rival? Think about this for a second most all of the tablets that people feel could take the iPad off of the throne have some sort of mobile coverage and Wi-Fi. So the only guess on why they would not include Wi-Fi is for pricing and since Microsoft’s mobile products have not done well I wonder if they are afraid to have two types of Surfaces.
