Ronald T. Garney Keeps pension in Child Porn case

Ronald T. Garney Keeps pension in Child Porn case

Sometimes we have to report disturbing news, and this is one of those times. Now I understand that the law is the law, and certain things shouldn’t affect others just because you did something else bad. But, when a former Ameherst Public School Teacher can keep his pension after pleading guilty for possession of child porn, I draw a line.

Under state law, a public employee must forfeit his/her pension if convicted of a criminal offense involving the laws that apply to his or her office or position. So how, on God’s green earth did he win this!!? You’re telling me that having child porn has nothing to do with the fact that he is around minors all day? There is no provision in the school code that prohibits this behavior? What if he were taking pictures of students? Would he still get to keep it? This guy should be locked away in a dungeon and the key thrown away.

When I was a kid we didn’t read about this garbage every day, people weren’t using their computers for this utter filth. To go further here at Computer Geeks, we have a strong anti-child porn stance, where we report any child pornography to the proper authorities if we see it on ANY computer.

Garney, 67, a former longtime ninth-grade science teacher, pleaded guilty in December 2007 to 11 counts of the purchase and possession of child pornography. He had been identified by federal authorities in 2004 as part of an online investigation of international commercial child pornography websites.

A raid by police of Garney?s home turned up 575 images of child pornography on his home computer and a library of 85 videos of child pornography organized by gender, according to court documents. The materials contained images of children, from toddlers to early teenagers, involved in sexual acts.

Garney was sentenced in February 2008 in Hampshire Superior Court to 2? to 3 years in state prison followed by 10 years probation and was required to register as a sex offender.

He received pension benefits totaling $31,119 from the time of his conviction until his benefits stopped in February 2009 after a retirement system hearing on the matter.

A district court decision upheld the teachers? retirement board decision to stop Garney?s benefits, but that was reversed in Worcester Superior Court last year.

My mother always told me once a predator always a predator so more than likely this pervert will get what’s coming to him, I can only hope we get a call to clean his computer one day and I get to make the call myself. And who knows? A Computer Geeks Legal IT client will probably be my first call!

Decriminalization of marijuana law now in place in D.C.

Decriminalization of marijuana law now in place in D.C.

A marijuana decriminalization law was passed by the D.C. Council in the spring started Thursday at 12:01 a.m. after a Congressional review process passed.

This new law will ease the punishments for minor marijuana offenses.

If anyone is found carrying over an ounce of marijuana, officers can only confiscate the drug and write a ticket of $25.

Another big change is that Police will not be able to take action by just a simple smell of marijuana, in fact that can’t even demand that any person carrying under an ounce of marijuana produce identification which is according to the Washington Post.

However civil penalties will still be in place for individuals using marijuana on federal government property and in public.

With such a major change to the law the police have to review and 8 page special order and even have to take an online tutorials states the Washington Times.

This law offers a huge change from the drug laws of the past but it looks like the lawyers in D.C. will have to be reading up on the this law just in case any officers do arrest someone that maybe following that law, however may be arrested under further suspicions.

Crypto Virus: Focusing on Consumers and the Law

Crypto Virus: Focusing on Consumers and the Law

You may have heard of the crypto locker virus. This virus came about late last year and has affected thousands of people and businesses. One of the business types that has been infected is the law. Police offices, lawyers and the bunch have been hit hard by this infection.

Back in December, Computer Geeks was featured in a news report from WBZ news to talk about the experience that people have with this virus. Computer Geeks is focused on not only removing the virus, but saving your data. Typically people infected with this virus have a one percent success rate of recovering their data and even paying the ransom may not guarantee you get your files back. Because of this, Computer Geeks recommends a data backup solution. This solution can be as easy as an external hard drive that you back up to on a scheduled basis or going up into the cloud and using a source like Carbonite to back your data up securely.

Computer Geeks IT support for law firms has been helping many lawyers not only to protect their data but also prevent infections such as the crypto locker virus. Computer Geeks also recommends a brand new product that we offer through Carbonite. This new appliance is set up to give you onsite data backup and cloud storage for redundancy of your files.

Please note that most people don’t think about how valuable their information is until it’s lost. This isn’t just for consumers, but businesses as well. Putting the focus on IT support for law firms, think about how tragic it would be if you lost your case files, client data and other vital information. Now that you’ve taken a minute to think about it, isn’t it worth contacting Computer Geeks to find out how you can protect that data with just a simple phone call?

Apple vs. Samsung Verdict

Apple vs. Samsung Verdict

For quite a while, cell phone giants Apple and Samsung have battled in the courtroom over patent rights. Now the verdict is in.

According to this verdict, Samsung infringed on two Apple patents. Apple was awarded almost $120 million. This jury also ruled Apple had violated a Samsung patent. However, Apple’s violation was declared unwillful and Samsung was awarded only $158,000. I say only because, hey, compared to 120 million, this is pocket change. Two of the patents in question were the 647 quick links patent and the 721 slide-to-unlock patent. The jury, led by an IBM executive, took 3 days to deliberate. Despite Apple seeking over two billion dollars in damage, Apple was satisfied with the ruling. They told the media, ?We are grateful to the jury and the court for their service. Today?s ruling reinforces what courts around the world have already found: That Samsung willfully stole our ideas and copied our products.”

Something tells me this isn’t over. Something tells me Samsung is going to appeal this ruling. In fact, this is shaping up to be one of the biggest rivalries in corporate American history. This ranks up there with Pepsi vs Coke, McDonald’s vs. Burger King, or General Motors vs Ford.? What do you think the next chapter of this saga will be?
